"Locals dub this location an enigmatic zone of Transylvania," remarks an experienced guide, his breath producing clouds of mist in the cold night air. "Numerous individuals have vanished here, some say there's a gateway to a different realm." Marius is escorting a traveler on a night walk through commonly known as the world's most haunted grove: Hoia-Baciu, a section spanning 640 acres of old-growth native woodland on the outskirts of the Romanian city of Cluj-Napoca.
Accounts of bizarre occurrences here extend back hundreds of years β the forest is titled for a local shepherd who is reportedly went missing in the far-off times, accompanied by two hundred animals. But Hoia-Baciu achieved worldwide fame in 1968, when a defense worker known as Emil Barnea took a picture of what he described as a UFO suspended above a round opening in the centre of the forest.
Numerous entered this place and vanished without trace. But no need to fear," he continues, addressing the traveler with a grin. "Our excursions have a flawless completion rate."
In the time after, Hoia-Baciu has attracted meditation experts, traditional medicine people, ufologists and ghost hunters from around the globe, curious to experience the mysterious powers said to echo through the forest.
It may be among the planet's leading destinations for lovers of the paranormal, this woodland is under threat. The outlying areas of Cluj-Napoca β a modern tech hub of a population exceeding 400,000, called the Silicon Valley of Eastern Europe β are encroaching, and construction companies are campaigning for authorization to clear the trees to erect housing complexes.
Aside from a few hectares housing area-specific oak varieties, this woodland is lacking legal protection, but the guide believes that the organization he co-founded β a dedicated preservation group β will assist in altering this, encouraging the authorities to recognise the forest's value as a tourist attraction.
As twigs and fall foliage split and rustle beneath their footwear, the guide tells some of the folk tales and alleged supernatural events here.
While many of the accounts may be unverifiable, numerous elements before my eyes that is undeniably strange. All around are plants whose trunks are warped and gnarled into bizarre configurations.
Different theories have been proposed to account for the deformed trees: strong gales could have shaped the young trees, or typically increased radioactivity in the earth explain their crooked growth.
But research studies have turned up insufficient proof.
The guide's tours permit visitors to take part in a modest investigation of their own. As we approach the opening in the woods where Barnea captured his well-known UFO pictures, he hands the traveler an electromagnetic field detector which registers EMF readings.
"We're entering the most powerful part of the forest," he states. "Try to detect something."
The plants immediately cease as they step into a flawless round. The single plant life is the trimmed turf beneath our feet; it's apparent that it's naturally occurring, and looks that this bizarre meadow is organic, not the result of human hands.
This part of Romania is a area which inspires creativity, where the line is indistinct between truth and myth. In countryside villages faith continues in strigoi ("screamers") β undead, form-changing bloodsuckers, who emerge from tombs to frighten local communities.
Bram Stoker's renowned character Dracula is forever associated with Transylvania, and the legendary fortress β a medieval building located on a stone formation in the Transylvanian Alps β is keenly marketed as "Dracula's Castle".
But even folklore-rich Transylvania β truly, "the land past the woods" β feels tangible and comprehensible versus the haunted grove, which appear to be, for reasons radioactive, environmental or purely mythical, a nexus for creative energy.
"Within this forest," Marius states, "the division between truth and fantasy is extremely fine."
