Relatives throughout this Jungle: This Struggle to Defend an Secluded Rainforest Community

The resident Tomas Anez Dos Santos worked in a small clearing deep in the of Peru jungle when he heard footsteps drawing near through the dense jungle.

He realized that he had been hemmed in, and froze.

“One stood, directing using an arrow,” he recalls. “Somehow he detected of my presence and I began to escape.”

He had come confronting the Mashco Piro tribe. For decades, Tomas—residing in the small community of Nueva Oceania—had been virtually a neighbour to these nomadic tribe, who avoid interaction with outsiders.

An updated study issued by a human rights organisation states there are at least 196 termed “uncontacted groups” remaining worldwide. The group is thought to be the largest. It says a significant portion of these groups could be decimated within ten years if governments don't do additional to protect them.

The report asserts the biggest dangers come from deforestation, digging or drilling for crude. Isolated tribes are exceptionally vulnerable to common sickness—therefore, the study says a danger is presented by interaction with religious missionaries and social media influencers looking for attention.

In recent times, the Mashco Piro have been venturing to Nueva Oceania more and more, as reported by residents.

This settlement is a fishing hamlet of a handful of households, sitting atop on the shores of the Tauhamanu waterway in the center of the of Peru Amazon, a ten-hour journey from the nearest village by canoe.

The area is not designated as a preserved reserve for isolated tribes, and logging companies operate here.

Tomas reports that, on occasion, the noise of logging machinery can be heard day and night, and the Mashco Piro people are witnessing their woodland damaged and ruined.

Among the locals, people say they are divided. They fear the Mashco Piro's arrows but they also have strong regard for their “relatives” residing in the forest and want to safeguard them.

“Permit them to live according to their traditions, we are unable to alter their way of life. For this reason we maintain our distance,” explains Tomas.

Inhabitants in Nueva Oceania are anxious about the damage to the community's way of life, the risk of violence and the possibility that loggers might expose the tribe to sicknesses they have no immunity to.

At the time in the settlement, the Mashco Piro made their presence felt again. A young mother, a woman with a young daughter, was in the jungle collecting food when she detected them.

“We heard shouting, cries from people, a large number of them. Like there was a large gathering shouting,” she informed us.

That was the first instance she had encountered the tribe and she ran. An hour later, her thoughts was persistently racing from terror.

“Since exist deforestation crews and companies cutting down the jungle they are escaping, possibly out of fear and they arrive near us,” she said. “It is unclear how they might react to us. This is what scares me.”

In 2022, two loggers were attacked by the Mashco Piro while fishing. One man was struck by an arrow to the abdomen. He recovered, but the second individual was discovered lifeless subsequently with multiple puncture marks in his physique.

The administration maintains a strategy of avoiding interaction with secluded communities, establishing it as prohibited to initiate encounters with them.

The strategy was first adopted in a nearby nation after decades of advocacy by community representatives, who saw that initial interaction with secluded communities could lead to whole populations being wiped out by sickness, destitution and malnutrition.

During the 1980s, when the Nahau community in Peru first encountered with the world outside, half of their population succumbed within a few years. A decade later, the Muruhanua community suffered the same fate.

“Secluded communities are very vulnerable—epidemiologically, any contact could introduce sicknesses, and even the simplest ones may eliminate them,” says an advocate from a Peruvian indigenous rights group. “In cultural terms, any interaction or disruption may be very harmful to their life and survival as a society.”
