FBI Director Kash Patel appeared before the Senate judicial panel on Tuesday sporting a necktie displaying the logo of English Premier League team Liverpool.
His accessory selection sparked questions on social media. Firstly, it is extremely rare for a government official to wear a tie featuring the insignia of a company or sports team. For another, Patel has never openly declared support for Liverpool previously—that is not in words.
That said, he has been pictured wearing Liverpool ties on no fewer than two separate instances. One occasion was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was meeting lawmakers on Capitol Hill after Donald Trump’s election victory. Back then, he was rumored to be entering the administration. Another instance took place roughly five months after, on 9 April 2025, at a press event highlighting the arrest of drug traffickers by US law enforcement.
Interestingly, the necktie used on Tuesday was different from the previous item. Previous design had broad lines and a subtle logo, while the newer one boasted thinner stripes and a more prominent logo—identified as the classic design.
His apparent possesses several Liverpool ties suggests that his selection is deliberate.
During Tuesday’s hearing, the atmosphere became contentious on several occasions. Patel engaged in a loud argument with US senators Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He stood by his leadership of the FBI, his dismissal of longtime employees implicated in probes related to the January 6 events, and a social media post in which he declared that a suspect was in custody for the murder of right-wing figure Charlie Kirk—a statement that proved premature.
“I don’t see it as a mistake,” Patel told senators. “I view it as cooperating with the public to confirm that there was a individual in custody.”
Should Patel actually follow Liverpool, it would represent a stark clash of ideological loyalties. Being among the US’s foremost law enforcement officials, Patel has been a public face of a second Trump administration that has employed authoritarian methods to impact various areas of public life.
These involve operations by ICE in public places that have resulted in the detention of hundreds of immigrants regardless of their residency or nationality. It also includes the sending of government officers to liberal US cities in response to supposed higher offense levels—claims that have been disproven.
Liverpool, on the other hand, is recognized to be one of the more progressive clubs in Europe, from one of the most left-leaning cities in the UK.
Famous Liverpool manager Bill Shankly once stated: “I believe the only way to live and to be truly successful is by collective effort, with everyone working for each other, everyone assisting each other, and everyone having a share of the rewards at the end of the day.”
Although the operations of Liverpool have evolved in modern times, traces of collectivist ideology remain. Former head coach Jürgen Klopp, who guided the club to great success from 2015 to 2024, summed up his personal politics by saying: “If I am doing well, I want others to do well, too. One thing I will never do in my life is vote for the right.”
Liverpool’s supporters also have a significant history of distrust toward law enforcement. Much of this originates in the Hillsborough disaster of 1989, which killed 97 Liverpool fans. At first, police accused the crowd of hooliganism and drunkenness. Subsequently, independent inquiries found that the crowd crush was due to serious failures by police, who had misled the people to shift responsibility.
Patel rose to prominence after the events of 6 January 2021, when he supported a legal defense fund for those arrested in connection with the Capitol breach. A former lawyer and legal aide to right-wing figures, Patel used his association with the previous Trump government to develop business ventures and a media career. In both roles, he promoted several conspiracy theories, including debunked allegations of voting irregularities and misleading information about Covid-19 vaccines.
