The veteran manager states he is on the verge of being appointed the Lisbon-based club manager after landing in the Portuguese capital for discussions with the Portuguese club.

The 62-year-old is set to replace the former coach, who was dismissed following Tuesday's Champions League loss at home against Qarabag.

The 62-year-old has only been out of work for under a month after being dismissed by Fenerbahce.

"Benfica officially asked me if I was interested. Which manager says no to such an opportunity? Certainly not I," Mourinho told reporters after arriving in Lisbon. "After I was offered the opportunity to coach Benfica, I jumped at the chance to say that I'm eager, that I'd want to."

He began his managerial career with the club in the year 2000 but took charge of only a handful of matches and left after a disagreement with the club president.

He then made his name with FC Porto between 2002-2004, claiming six trophies - including the UCL in 2003-04.

After leaving his native country in 2004, Mourinho has managed Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, United, Tottenham Hotspur, Roma and Fenerbahce.

He left the Istanbul side on August 29, two days after they were eliminated from the Champions League play-offs by Benfica.

If Benfica appoint Mourinho, he would face Chelsea in the Champions League at their home ground on September 30.

The team also travel to Newcastle United and host the Spanish giants later in the group stage of the competition.
