The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.
Replay systems are set to arrive at The Championships this year.
Competitors are granted the option to contest particular calls from the official, mirroring the practice already in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.
The new system will be operational on Centre Court and Court One for the duration of the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This move follows just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, including:
- Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
- Possible hindrance end of a rally.
Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a player can initiate.
Case in Point
An illustrative example occurred in a recent tournament last week, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.
Draper conceded it was a difficult situation for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."
Official Aurelie Tourte watched a video and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.
Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.
This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was out or in.
Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
